Boot failure on F2FS installations

October 12, 20261 min. read

Updating f2fs-tools to V1.17.0 broke boot on F2FS installations, as the new version is interactive by default (requires user confirmation), and this breaks our use case: running it at every boot inside initramfs.

The breaking change started on 2026-10-01 (Alpine package update) and remained until 2026-10-12 (initramfs fix). If you selected F2FS during installation and updated and rebooted your phone in this timeframe, you system will be hanging during boot.

The fix is already merged so updating is now safe.

Fix

!9723 changes postmarketos-initramfs to invoke resize.f2fs using the -F, to make it non interactive and avoid the boot hang.

Recovery

To recover your system, you can enter the debug shell by holding Volume Down during boot or adding pmos.debug-shell to the cmdline.

Then you can edit the initramfs scripts to skip the filesystem resize, then resume the boot.

sed -i 's/resize_root_filesystem//g' /init_2nd.sh
pmos_continue_boot

Finally, after your phone is booted, upgrade the system to install the fixed packages.

# apk upgrade -a
