Nura in 2026-10: OSC Tokio, statutes, and project updates

A collage showing Rob and Masanori at OSC Tokio sitting in a Nura stand with
some Nura devices on it. Of course all picture taken on a phone with Nura!

This month, Rob and Masanori (thanks both!) represented Nura at the Fall OpenSource Conference in Tokyo, Japan. They handed over close to 50 leaflets, and showcased a great variety of devices, with attendants being astonished with how well Plasma Mobile and Phosh worked on them. Attendants were also happy to learn about the project rename, which is great news!

Organizational

mobile-config-firefox

The project to make firefox adaptive on mobile saw three new releases: 5.5.0, 5.5.1, and 5.5.2. Overall, it adds support for Firefox versions up to 159, and improves support for ESR version 153. It also adds initial flatpak support, so that flatpak beyond Nura can also benefit from our work.

q6voiced project update

q6voiced is a set of downstream patches and downstream daemon to provide call audio support for QualComm devices. A couple of months ago, we introduced a project, to work on an upstreamable solution that would important bring improvements to the audio stack that many in our community want to see. Since then, we have received multiple queries about the status of the project. Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, the initial analysis and architectural redesign has been delayed, and they probably won't come until December this year. We hope we are able to provide an update with some completed work by then.

New UI: Catacomb

Catacomb UI apps overview

Catacomb is a Wayland-based UI designed for Linux Mobile, optimized for battery life on low-end hardware. It has very minimal system requirements, making it a great fit for devices which may not be powerful enough for other UIs.

We are very happy to announce that Catacomb is now packaged into Alpine and Nura (!7690) and to have more UIs being added to keep old devices useful in real-world scenarios! Thank you Ferass and Christian Duerr.

As part of this effort, there are still some remaining apps in the suite that are not yet packaged but will make their way soon, however it is already in a very usable state. Check out the wiki page!

And of course everybody who has helped out in other ways, such as helping others to run Nura (e.g. in chats or IRL), improving documentation in the wiki, doing infrastructure and organizational work, or donating to Nura.

You are the people who make this possible!
